No Lockdown on Violence Against Journalist During Pandemic

The research starts with the proposition that the pandemic might have affected the number of
attacks or assaults against journalists. But as reported by the journalist association, regardless
of violence cases against journalists was declining in 2021, the number is still high. There were
cases of violence against journalists during the pandemic, both globally and locally. This
research stems from the intention to map violence against journalists. Two main concepts are
used here: violence against journalists and press freedom. Violence against journalists is the
main object of the research while press freedom is considered as the platform of the theoretical
framework to analyze the result. The researcher uses qualitative content analysis as the method
for analyzing the data. News articles from several prominent outlets were analyzed
independently and classified based on the actor of the violence, the type of violence, and the
motive of the violence. The result of this research shows that during the pandemic year and
transitional period in 2022, violence against journalists was still happening with various types
from intimidation to drop stories up to murder. Those involved in such violence are civilians,
public order agency officers, soldiers, and government officials. The main motives can be
classified into two: to prevent them from covering certain issues or events and as a response to
negative coverage. This study implies that press freedom should not only be seen from the
lenses of free from government intervention, but also from threat or intimidation, as well as
other types of violence. This research also implicates the need for safety training for journalists.
