Sustainable Consumption Behavior - Can Environmental Concern, Self-Efficacy, Environmental Knowledge And Guilt Make A Difference?

An increase in economic development and consumption rate has led to several environment problems like pollution and overflowing amount of waste in Indonesia. Since consumption is considered as one of the major cause of these problems, the role of consumers as the main actor of consumption behavior is needed. Consumers would bring major difference in environmental preservation by their environmentally-friendly behavior and action. Thus, it is important to
discover what factors can influence consumers’ sustainable consumption behavior. This study focuses on predicting and explaining sustainable consumption behavior by proposing a model comprises of environmental concern, self-efficacy, consumer guilt and environmental knowledge as the predictor. The model is tested by conducting a survey using a self-administered questionnaire on 200 younger millennials in Indonesia. The method used to test research hypotheses is multiple regression analysis, processed by SPSS 20. The result of this study shows that environmental concern, self-efficacy and environmental knowledge have an influence on sustainable consumption behavior, where environmental knowledge contributes the most in predicting the aforementioned behavior. Meanwhile, this study also finds that consumer guilt has no impact towards this behavior.
