The Role of Social Media in Rising the Awareness of Violence against Women in the Education Sector and Individual Willingness to Mobilize Against It

The role of social media is no longer just a means of self-existence, but has also been used to convey various social issues, one of them is violence or abuse against women. Violence can occur in various forms, ranging from verbal (catcalling, sexist comments), sexual assertions, sending messages or pictures with sexual content, to rape. The rise of sexual harassment cases occurring in the education sector in Indonesia has led NGOs and feminist groups to bring about various campaigns to raise public awareness about it. Instagram, as one of the most popular social media platforms today, is widely used to disseminate information about violence against women in the education sector. Some of the content uploaded on Instagram includes infographics, photos and illustrations with captions describing them. This study aims to find out the role of social media, especially Instagram in raising awareness about violence against women in the education sector and also to find out the willingness to engage in collective action to do something about it. This study is hoped to provide information about things that must be considered by organizations that want to perform online social campaigns, especially regarding sexual violence against women.
